A Spring Trip to Fredericksburg............

Without going into detail.....its chaos at my house right now...so .... hubs and i decided to take a trip to Fredericksburg, TX... Cringing at the gas prices we hit the road....... Fredericksburg is also the closest place we can buy the Sugar Free A&W Rootbeer we like so much.. So we stocked up..  We walked around the Trade Days which is a huge fleamarket/antique market that is set up in and around 6 remodeled chicken houses.. Then we strolled up and down mainstreet stopping at our favorite stores.. and found a new to us restaurant to grab lunch...
We literally had to go down , down, down... a little hole in the wall , but you know they are some of the best places to eat...
I'm sorry about the glare in the next few photos...
I'm not even sure if you can read the menu.......
After some debate we chose 'The Kraut'... thinking a sampler plate was a good way to try out a new restaurant...
Then i forgot to take another picture until we were almost done eating.... geesh.... Well as you can see it was pretty darn good... lol   However after spending 3 years in Germany years ago we are always looking for good German food... While this was good food it did not taste like the German food we remember...
Maybe one day we will win the Lottery and fly back to Germany and enjoy the German food the way we remember it.. Thanks for stopping by on Kathy's Food Wednesday! Hope your having a great week!! My next post will show everything i'm entering into the Art and Craft show. I have to turn it all in on Saturday... Hugs! deb

  1. Good morning Deb, sounds like a very fun day out. One side of Larry's grandparents were from Germany (they fled the war being Jewish) so he grew up on good German food. We always enjoyed a good flea market too.we haven't done that in some time and there is a huge outdoor one not too far from here.
That is my favorite root beer too.
sometimes after StPatrick's day stores will mark down the corned beef-I bought two last year so I would have them in the freezer. Happy Food Wednesdays and so glad you linked up

  4. Hi Deb ☺ The plate looks so yummy. I was in Germany for only a few days, way back in the 80's...right when the Wall was about to be taken down. I had a nice bratwurst plate and it was so good, you're right, not the same outside of that country!

  5. How funny is this. In the town I grew up the Rathskeller was one of the main hotels/restaurants, right down the street.
Fun menue, too! Opa is mentioned, LOL.
A sampler plate is a great idea - we have that at our brewery with mini-beers.
Where in Germany have you been? (If you like to tell) - and what is German food to you, I wonder.
Maybe you like to share in another post? Would be interesting! Hugs

  6. Here in Ann Arbor, Michigan, we used to have around 5 German restaurants, which were the only good ones in town. German immigrants settled here over 100 years ago, and the same families maintained the restaurants for generations. So we know all sorts of German dishes that are unusual in the US. But things have been changing a lot lately, and besides we aren't eating out much because of covid.

  7. Being German who has lived in the States for more than 20 years I often crave German food. We are extremely lucky to have one very good German restaurant here that cooks food like in Germany. For my husband's birhday I used to cook his favorite German meals, but it can get very challenging, if not impossible, to find the right meat etc. My biggest issue is bread. We get some really good bread here, but none of it is like the wonderful breads back home.
Where in Germany have you been?

  10. In a little town just north of Wichita, they have a large German population. They have one restaurant I have been to that serves buffet style soups and salads, along with their homemade bread. It's a wise choice to get a sampler platter, but it sounds like it didn't quite meet your expectations. Still, it was nice you took us there.

  11. I think I would have gone with the Wiener Schnitzel. I took a trip to Germany back in high school. The only thing I didn't like, and I tried! was the sauerkraut.

  12. Hi Deb, hope you are feeling a lot better now. I know from experience that as we mature it is a lot harder to spring back from sickness. My father in law was part German and was always talking to us. it made him happy but we had no idea what he was saying and as for food, a hot dog count? can't wait to see what you have done for the fair. i am sure it is fantastic.
